WW2 meant Disney couldn’t export its cartoons to Occupied Europe so they started looking at the South American market [1].
Amongst other features set in South America they created “Saludos Amigos” (“Hello, friends” in English and “Alô, Amigos” in Portuguese). This is “Aquarela do Brasil” (or “Watercolor of Brazil”) which is the last of four segments from this feature and introduces a new character: Joe (Zé) Carioca.
This is a Disney classic and one I remember watching re-runs at the cinema when I was a kid. Oh, the sweet memories. It features Zé Carioca smoking a cigar and introducing Donald Duck to samba and Cachaça (a very popular rum like drink in Brazil and used, for example, in caipirinhas). You wouldn’t get any of this in a 21st century Disney feature.
